The National AHEC Organization
The National AHEC (Area Health Education Centers) program was developed by Congress in 1971 to recruit, train and retain a health professions workforce committed to underserved populations. The AHEC program helps bring the resources of academic medicine to address local community health needs. The strength of the AHEC Network is its ability to creatively adapt national initiatives to help address local and regional healthcare issues.
Today, 56 AHEC programs with more than 235 centers operate in almost every state and the District of Columbia. Approximately 120 medical schools and 600 nursing and allied health schools work collaboratively with AHECs to improve health for underserved and under-represented populations. The AHEC organization connects Students to Careers, Professionals to Communities, and Communities to Better Health.
The Florida AHEC Network
The Florida AHEC Network is an extensive, statewide network of five AHEC Program Offices affiliated with the Colleges of Medicine at: Florida State University, Nova Southeastern University, University of Florida, University of Miami, and University of South Florida. Affiliated with these AHEC Program Offices are 10 regionally-based, not-for-profit Centers serving all 67 Florida counties. The Florida AHEC Network has addressed the healthcare needs of Florida’s rural, underserved, minority and immigrant populations – all with severe unmet healthcare needs – for over 25 years. Florida AHEC’s support the state’s indigent safety net healthcare system by responding to access to care issues, health workforce recruitment and retention, promoting the quality of healthcare, and strengthening the public health infrastructure in high impact, medically needy communities.
With funding from the Comprehensive Statewide Tobacco Education and Use Prevention Program, the AHEC Tobacco Training and Cessation Program began in 2007. It provides tobacco cessation and prevention training to current and future healthcare professionals, and cessation programs for all users in every county of the state. Since 1995, all AHEC program offices and centers have specialized in a wide variety of health education including; cancer education, diabetes management, oral health education and much more.
