Northeast Florida Area Health Education Center is a leader in providing programs that support and encourage students to become future health professionals by providing access to academic enrichment programs beginning in secondary educational settings to college level through credited and non-credited courses. These health career preparation programs greatly improve the supply and diversity of the health workforce in north Florida. To accomplish this objective, Northeast Florida AHEC recruits students from disadvantaged backgrounds based on economic, geographical (rural or urban-inner city), educational opportunity disparities and/or underrepresented ethnic or cultural groups in the health professions. Through extensive collaboration with our valued community partners (including county health departments, community health centers, rural hospitals and clinics, mental health facilities, private physicians, academic institutions, and others that host students for volunteer, observational, or community project experiences), Northeast Florida AHEC is able to increase the knowledge of health careers (including public health) for students in rural and urban underserved areas.
Health Care Summer Clinical Site Tours (HCSCST)
The Health Care Summer Clinical Site Tours (HCSCST) program exposes high school students to a series of half-day clinical tours to rural and underserved clinics in our Northeast Florida region. Students selected will shadow and have direct learning experiences with health care professionals, take photographs, and conduct brief interviews with a variety of health care providers to include nurses, physicians, physician assistants, dentists, dental assistants, and mental/behavioral health professionals. The following clinics and educational institutions currently participate as partners for this project:
- Community Health Outreach Healing Hands Medical and Dental Clinic – Jacksonville, FL
- Florida Department of Health in Duval County – Jacksonville, FL
- Barnabas Health Services – Fernandina Beach, FL
- St Vincent’s Cardiopulmonary Clinic – Jacksonville, FL
- St Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program – Jacksonville, FL
- University of North Florida School of Nursing
- Florida State College at Jacksonville
- Physical Therapy Assistant Program
- Dental Hygiene Program
- Nursing Program
- Respiratory Therapy Program
The Health Care Summer Clinical Site Tours program concludes with a celebration banquet where students create and present a project highlighting their 2-week experience. The banquet is held at The Bridge of Northeast Florida, a unique 501 © (3) agency whose goal is to provide the children that live in some of Jacksonville’s most crime infested, impoverished neighborhoods with the opportunities they need to overcome barriers and to support them as they aspire to better their lives.

Health Care Summer Institute (HCSI)
Health Care Summer Institute is an enrichment program designed to provide high school students with experience and exposure to a health care environment and to expose students to academics at the college level. Northeast Florida AHEC works in partnership with the Office of Minority Affairs and University of Florida AHEC at the College of Medicine to recruit high school students within the service area to participate in the Health Care Summer Institute at the University of Florida.
